How to shutoff the water when you have a leak

Water Leak

1) Round handle shutoff valves are an old design and may not shut water off, may not turn back on, or may leak from the valve. You can have more confidence in the straight handle type ball valve shutoff.

2) If the leak is from a faucet or toilet, you can try the Fixture Shutoff Valve in the cabinet or beside the toilet.

3) If the Fixture Shutoff Valve does not work, or for a tub/shower, or a pipe leak in a wall or crawlspace, you will have to use the Main Shutoff Valve.

4) Look for the Main Shutoff Valve in a closet near the front door, panty, garage, basement, or crawlspace. After closing the main valve, opening hose faucets will help relieve system pressure.
